One Flower Wednesday

It has been a few weeks since I have posted my flower for the One Flower Wednesday. I have just been busy with life and trying to win a GO from other bloggers. It has been fun looking around at all the other blogs. So much that I lose track of time and then don't have time to post on my own blog.
I haven't posted any flowers in awhile but I have been working on them. Here are a few that I have finished. I took the pictures quickly so they are not the best. I have them on my design wall and the lighting wasn't that good. Now I am off to go look at everyone's flowers.

Learning Freemotion Machine Quilting

I enjoyed having five days off from work. We had some very nice days compared to the days leading up to my days off with all the rain. We needed it though.
I have been trying my hand at freemotion machine quilting. Last month I took a class at my favorite quilt shop Tomorrow's Quilts. I had a lot of fun and learned some good ideas for freemotion quilting. I did seem to have some trouble getting my stitches to look good. I tried using different thread and needles. I think I may have it right now. Here are just two of the many sandwich squares that I have been practicing on.

I made a small wallhanging for the class out of five inch squares that I had in my scrap box. The only thing I had time to do in the class to the wallhanging was to get it pinned.....I don't like that pinning part but I know it has to be done. After all those practice squares I finally felt a little confidence to work on the wallhanging. I did some stippling on it. Here are a few squares of it.

I also did some machine quilting on a table runner that I had done a few months ago called Taco Salad from Atkinson Designs book called "Let's Do Lunch". I love her patterns. Fun and easy to do. I have several table runners and placemats that I have been wanting to do some machine quilting on.

I aslo spent some time this weekend cutting out my hexie papers for my Grandmothers Flower Garden Quilt. I know...I could buy these already cut but I have started doing them this way and I want to finish them like this. I haven't had time to post for my One Flower Wednesdays but I have several of them done since my last post. I will try to get them posted this Wednesday.

One Flower Wednesday

Well I didn't get to post any new flowers last week....busy busy. First I would like to say thank you to everyone that posted a comment on my last post. That was the most comments I have had since I started blogging. I enjoyed seeing everyones new flowers....this One Flower Wednesday is fun. I may not get to post every Wednesday but I will do my best to get a few done each month. I didn't know how much the hexies were going to be addicting. I have been digging through all my leftover scraps to find more colors for more flowers. When I go to the quilt shop now I am even looking for fabric to be used in some flowers....I tell you again it is very addicting and relaxing.

I like the pink colors but I have a abundance of them in my stash because I had made a pink quilt for my youngest daughter. I will use some of them but I don't want to have to many pinks.
I had this peach and blue scraps for awhile now so it's good to be able to use them up.
Happy One Flower Wednesday to everyone.

One Flower Wednesday

Ok I have never really joined a sew along kind of thing here on the blogs.....but I am going to give this one a try. I like to sometimes have things to work on while I watch tv...which I do to much of anyway. I have sewed my yo yos a few times....but I get tired of them and you can have so many yo yos. I went to my favorite quilt shop the other day and they were putting a quilt up on the quilting machine that had been hand sewn....it was a Wedding Ring quilt. The lady that made it had hand sewn it.....she always does such great work be it either by machine or hand. I have always said I wouldn't do a quilt by hand because I know it would take me the rest of my life to finish it...(OK Gail if you are reading this I know what you are thinking...It will take the rest of my life to machine sew all the quilts I have going now...lol)..... Ok so anyway I have joined the One Flower Wednesday over at Journey of a Quilter. http://journeyofaquilter.blogspot.com/

My goal will be to make one flower every Wednesday. I am going to give it a try.
Here are the first two flowers I did. I have a lot of scraps to use up.

I have also worked on two more and this is the way I will do the rest of my flowers.

I am hoping to make a quilt that will look something like this one

So wish me luck on this flower making....making these hexies have been really relaxing to me. I am also looking forward to seeing all the other flowers that are being made.

Missed May

Well I can't believe that I haven't posted since the month of April. Life has just kept me busy. Plus I like to look around at all the many other quilting blogs so much that I forget about mine. Summer is here so I am going to be busy with grand kids and just trying to get outside more. I will try to save a little bit of time for sewing. I am going to my favorite quilt shop this next week for a machine quilting class. I hope I will like it.....I have tried one time to do some machine quilting on my bernina machine but I just couldn't get it......so I am hoping this class with help me. I have alot of table runners and toppers that I would like to get quilted.

I saw a pattern in one of my many quilt magazine for a quilt that was done in black and white colors. I have never thought I would like just a black and white quilt......but....now that is all I can seem to think about it.
Here are a few blocks that I have done....oh and I am going to put a little bit of other color in it like red or maybe some green...haven't decided on that yet.

With the left over 2 1/2 inch squares I made some nine patches.......ideas for another black and white quilt.

This is also another idea I would like to try in black and white.

Ok so it's off to hunt for more black and white fabric...that is the fun part...I will keep you updated on the hunt.
I hope everyone has a great quilting day.

Working on some UFOs

I get five days off from work this week so I am hoping to work on some of these UFOs. I did a little bit of work on them a few weeks ago and put them on my design wall to see what they might look like.

I have fallen in love with Debbie Caffrey's book "Open a Can of Worms" My favorite pattern from that book is the Four Patches and Friends. It is so easy and a great way to use up some scraps. I always cut up 2 1/2 inch squares from any scraps I have left over from any other quilt projects. This pattern works very well with those squares. I have alot of flower scraps so this one I am making with those and I have another going with just all my diferent scraps.

I really would like to finish my grandsons fish bowl quilt. It took me awhile to collect all the fish material but it was fun doing it. Every bowl has a differnt kind of fish in it. Here are two of the rows that I have done already on my design wall. I still have to buy the sashing for in between the rows. I think I am going to try to find some blue or green colors.

Well I better go get sewing on these UFOs. These five days will go by to fast.

More Dresden Plates

I am still really interested in the Dresden Plate block. I can't believe how much I thought how hard this block would be to do. But is isn't and is fun to do. I was looking around in blogland and came across Lurline's Place http://lurlineg.blogspot.com/. She has a Dresden Plate Tutorial for this style of Dresden plate. Thank you Lurline for posting this. I love it. I love scrappy quilts so this Dresden just falls right in there. I put together a few of my flower scrap pieces and this is the one I came up with.

I then wanted to try a smaller Dresden plate block. I had just bought the March/April issue of McCalls quilting magazine and found this pattern by Virginia Robertson http://www.virginiarobertsondesigns.com/home I love this too. I will try to make this one of my many next projects to do. I got out a few of my 1930's scraps and made this Dresden up from the magazine pattern. I think this one is my favorite size of Dresden.

I hope everyone is having a good day.
One quilting project, like one cookie, is never enough!

Dresden Plate Blocks

Let me just say that it has been a little while since I have posted on my blog. I had some knee surgery but I am doing good now and fixing to go back to work this Monday. I have been off for about seven weeks now.
While I was off I did try to get a little bit of sewing done. I have fallen in love with the Dresden Plate block. I have seen so many beautiful quilts with this block. I found this tool called The Easy Dresden. I love it.
I have only made one block but I want to do more and more. I am hoping to make a full size quilt.

I am not sure about one thing. I am not sure if after I applique the plate to the background fabric do I need the cut out the background fabric on the inside of the stitching to make it not so bulky?
I am kind of new to appliqueing. I haven’t really done a lot of it. I did this by machine with a blanket stitch. I wanted to do it in black thread to give it that older look.
To the ladies at Tomorrows Quilts shop in Waco Tx. I will be coming there this next month to stock up on some 1930’s fabric for my Dresden quilt.
